Multi-million-pound Cultural Gateway in Coventry hits new milestone

Coventry City Council has approved the capital expenditure for the City Centre Cultural Gateway (CCCG) which will see the transformation of the former Ikea building into a three-stage multi-million pound development. The capital expenditure was approved for three stages of the transformation of the former IKEA building. Each stage will see Coventry City Council working with different partners and organisations to carry out the plans. Following public consultations in February 2023, planning permission has been submitted for the multi-million-pound scheme. Phase One will see part of the building being repurposed to become a Collections Centre of national significance where CV Life, Arts Council England, Arts Council Collection and the British Council will house their collections. Phase Two will see Coventry University take floors five and six. Coventry University has plans to transform the two floors into a cultural hub, which will see a range of facilities on offer, including teaching areas, research space and attractions. Coventry University also plans for the two floors to house a gallery, café, library and exhibition space, dance studio, conference area, artists’ studios, post-production filming facilities and a shop where students can sell their artwork. Many of these facilities will be open to the public or available to hire. Phase Three will allow the Council to enclose and future-proof the internal car park floors. This will allow feasibility work to be undertaken to explore alternative uses for the new internal space created. Coventry City Council added its ambition is that the planned enclosure of floors one and two will facilitate the exploration of other cultural partnerships and uses. This includes growing community cultural partnerships to make flexible space more accessible to a range of cultural organisations who often find it challenging to secure creative and collaborative working spaces. Councillor David Welsh, Coventry City Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, which covers arts and culture, said: “I am really excited to see that the capital expenditure received approval, meaning we can go ahead and start work on progressing some of the plans. I love that all of the Phases are all so different but equally encompass the cultural value Coventry holds. “They each look at something entirely different, providing Coventry residents and visitors to the city with a cultural destination that gives so much. We will be seeing everything from gallery and exhibition areas, to post-production space and a place for collections and artefacts of national significance to be stored.” He added: “This is such a huge milestone for the project and means we can really start to make changes internally and externally and demonstrate further the benefits of the City Centre Cultural Gateway to all.”
